Labor Day: History + Events For The Weekend

Labor Day is a holiday that began in New York City 133 years ago.

It is still disputed who founded the holiday… Matthew Maguire, a machinist and secretary of the Central Labor Union, or Peter McGuire, the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and cofounder of the American Federation of Labor. Regardless, the holiday was proposed in 1882 on Tuesday, September 5th. In 1884, the holiday began being celebrated on the first Monday of the month, where it remains to this day.

This year Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7th. To help you celebrate “the workingman’s holiday,” here’s a list of the best events the city has to offer.
