Programming Internship at 77 WABC

77 WABC Radio is owned by Cumulus Media and is part of a four-station cluster in New York City. The station’s studios are above Madison Square Garden and convenient to all public transportation. A college internship with the Programming Department is a great way for students to explore journalism and radio broadcasting as a career path. The internship is available in all semesters.

The internship is open to college students pursuing a degree in communications, journalism or related fields. Prospective interns must have a strong interest in journalism, a love for news, political issues and New York City trends and stories.

Students will spend 2 to 3 days per week at 77 WABC learning from the Program Director, who supervises this program. Hours are flexible to fit class schedules. Students will also be given assignments where they learn directly from show hosts and producers. Students will be taught how to edit audio for broadcasts and podcasts, how to book guests, take part in brainstorming sessions to generate show topics, and learn how to create compelling social media content. Interns also have the opportunity to shadow employees in other departments at Cumulus NY, including promotions, sales and digital media.

Students should be comfortable with taking public transportation as they may be asked to accompany or meet a crew on location.

The internship is unpaid. Academic credit must be earned as part of a degree program and all course requirements must be fulfilled.
